1854 WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON. Thoughts on Abolition, the Civil War and a Changing Christianity. RARE
An exceptionally rare item with no copies on the market at any price. During the 1840’s and 50’s, the church was in crisis. Much of the theological angst and questioning was a result of the church’s refusal to speak to the pro-slavery powers clearly and take a moral stand against slavery. It caused a wholesale questioning of the church. It is perhaps not without analogy to our present situation.
Present and contributing were William Lloyd Garrison [he was one of the organizers of the event], Stephen S. Foster [more incendiary than Garrison even], Henry Clark Wright, etc., The looming presence of the church’s lack of earnestness in the cause of slavery is underscored by the fact that slaves, slavery, and related ideas are mentioned over 100 times in the course of the work.
An important item.

Good + with some nicks to cloth; early ex library, though actually quite attractive. Text very crisp and clean.
