Rather clean copy of one of the most influential works in the pre-war era. Barnes was often-suspected of being a progressive and not doctrinally "reformed" enough for the Old School and formally charged with heresy in 1831. He was not found guilty, but was censured.
That said, his commentaries assured him a role as the most influential Presbyterian in the church at large. This meant his voice lent to the abolitionist work had a significant effect on middle of the road "evangelicals" of the day.
Barnes, Albert. The Church and Slavery. Philadelphia. Parry & McMillan. 1857. 196pp.
A good copy, bound in cloth, generally solid, with moderate foxing, and ex library markings. Minor adhesive residue at spine.
