The present work, published c.1857, was one of the most significant issued by the abolitionist American Reform Tract and Book Society of Cincinnati. In it, one of the most respected preachers of the day, George B. Cheever, in page after page blisters about the moral and spiritual responsibility of the pulpit to preach abolitionism and the evils of slavery. The preaching movement it helped develop and reinforce, compounded with the influence of Uncle Tom's Cabin at the popular level, created the grassroots support in the North necessary to wage the Civil War. An important work, and a very fine copy.

Cheever, George B. God Against Slavery: And the Freedom and Duty of the Pulpit to Rebuke It, as a Sin Against God. Cincinnati. American Reform Tract and Book Society. c.1857. 272pp.

Good + to very good. Very solid, clean and crisp. A bit dulled on spine with a few stray stains there as well. Period inscription on title neatly as shown.
