1857 J. M. STURTEVANT. Sermon Predicting God would Give America Nearly the Entire World! Wild.
Sturtevant, J. M. [President of Illinois College]. American Emigration. A Discourse in Behalf of the American Home Missionary Society, Preached in the Cities of New York and Brooklyn, May, 1857. New York. American Home Missionary Society. 1857. 34pp.
A truly staggering, swaggering sermon of truly global proportions. Sturtevant argues that the emigration of the Pilgrims to America was indeed the new Jewish entrance into Canaan, meant to lead to a global Jewish nation, or American nation now. He argues that the growth of Christian America, made possible by superior religion and morality, must reach 1,000 millions by the year 2007 and that by that time, Christian Americans will have populated [i.e. swallowed them up and incorporated them into the United States] South America, The Pacific Islands, Africa, and possibly Asia in a sort of population / financial / ethical colonialism. I had to read it twice to ensure I was picking up what he was laying down. Bold anyway; that’s for sure. Mid-19th century American ego-centrism at its zenith.
Interestingly, he makes repeated mention of slavery in other countries, but not in America.
