A very handsome volume of addresses by Kentucky Congressman, Thomas Francis Marshall (1801–1864). T. F. Marshall was the nephew of Chief Justice John Marshall, and renowned for his volatile oratory. Like many border-state Whigs, he occupied a complex and contradictory middle ground in the run up to the Civil War. While he consistently defended Southern property rights, vehemently opposed immediate Northern abolitionism, and attempted to censure John Quincy Adams in Congress for presenting anti-slavery petitions, he simultaneously opposed the expansion of slavery, favored gradual emancipation schemes paired with colonization, and argued that the institution stifled Kentucky’s economic development. Fairly extensive slavery content throughout.
