Fascinating first-hand account of the Prayer Revival of 1857-1859. Speaks positively of the revival then ongoing, "a change as remarkable as it was unexpected...I shall offer some observations upon the features of this work of grace, - and then a few considerations as to the encouragements it suggest on one hand, and the solemn memento of duty it furnishes on the other..." He points out that the revival began "in a profound and earnest spirit of supplication and prayer," that it can be attributed to "the operation of no human agency;" and "that it has, almost universally, awed opposition into silence."
