An interesting little volume; this first edition of Everett's biography of General / President George Washington has been rather painstakingly restored, being respined retaining as much of the original spine as possible. On the whole, now a rather serviceable example of the first single volume edition of this classic biography.

This copy apparently gifted via a tipped in slip by Everett to a young student, Grace Cushing Studley, on her leaving Everett School in 1864.

Everett was, at the time, the most celebrated orator in America, thus his double-booking with Abraham Lincoln at the opening of the  Gettysburg National Cemetery where his two hour oration was followed up by Lincoln's rather brief, and forever celebrated, Gettysburg Address. The present gifted just months after Gettysburg, and also just a year or so before his death in 1865. A rather nice association copy.

Everett, Edward. The Life of George Washington. New York. Sheldon and Company. 1960. First Edition Thus. 348pp.

Good as shown, worn through at corners and board edges. Generally solid and clean. One leaf, i.e. 35/36 slightly skewed in binding and abraded at edges. Else rather crisp.
