A very handsomely preserved 1860 very early edition of the Southern Methodist Hymnal, so-formed as a result of the Methodist division over slavery.

This copy signed faintly on ffep by A. J. Yancey [born c.1846], grandson of the pro-slavery Senator, Henry Judson Yancey of Cooper Co., Missouri, and son of Captain Alfred Yancey who headed a Kentucky Militia for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Being 15 years old or so at the beginning of hostilities, it would not have been unusual for A. J. to play some roll in the Confederate Army, but we trace no record of his activity.

[Methodist, Civil War]. A Collection of Hymns for Public, Social, and Domestic Worship. Nashville, Tenn.: Southern Methodist Publishing House. 1860.

Good + in full calf, attractive, front hinge rubbed through, but very solid, corners rubbed, text a bit handled. Overall a much nicer than usual example.
