A rather rare 1860 Danish - English parallel translation issued by the New York American Bible Society. During the early 1800's the weak economy of Denmark led many young men to leave for America. Largely landing in New York and other Eastern Cities, they brought their farming skills to the midwest and sailing skills to the new trade to the west coast. The American Bible Society was ready in an instant with a new Danish - English Bible designed to not only provide devotion, but facilitate learning the English language as well.

The present has a fine original label from the New York Bible Society on the pastedown descirbing the present as being prepared for "Government vessels,  military posts n the harbor, shipping, seamen, emigrants, etc."

This copy belonged to Captain John T. Connick of Port Gamble. He married Carrie G. Harmond, c.1860 in Port Gamble in Puget Sound, Washington. He was Captain up and down the coast between San Francisco and Port Gamble, including of the Georgia and the Tacoma, considered the finest tug boat in the Northwest. The Bible was then passed to Captain Hector A Friis of San Franciso, CA [presumably at Connick's death]. He was Assistant Harbor Master there. Friis later became a Captain in Honolulu, HI, Hilo, HI, etc.,
