1861 ADONIRAM B. JUDSON. Matthew Brady CDV of Adoniram Judson's Son in Civil War!
Here is a wonderful little item with multiple points of interest. The carte de visite is executed by Matthew Brady, premier photographer of the Civil War era whose photographs fetch vast sums at auction [depending of course upon sitter, etc.].
Additionally, the sitter [or rather, stander] in this case is Adoniram Brown Judson [b.1837], son of the famed missionary, Adoniram Judson. Here just 24 years old this photo taken in his military uniform. Despire the fact that he was still an undergraduate in medicine, he applied for the United States Navy and was accepted. He was enlisted as an Asst. Surgeon on 7/30/61 and was commissioned into the US Navy on that date. Promoted to Surgeon on 12/26/66. Resigned on 5/11/68. Served on the following ships: Mortar Flotilla, New Ironsides, U.S.S. Nantucket, the Muscoota, and the Michigan; and in the West Gulf and South Atlantic Squadrons. His dress sword sold recently for $7,500.00
An unusual Civil War / Matthew Brady / Missionary Related Item.
