A very handsomely preserved large 4to leather volume of the works of Calvinistic divine, Augustus Toplady.

Augustus Montague Toplady (1740–1778) was an English Anglican cleric, hymn writer, and staunch Calvinist theologian remembered today by the majority of Christians for his authorship of the hymn "Rock of Ages". As a leading 18th-century defender of Calvinism, he was a prominent and direct opponent of John Wesley, championing divine sovereignty and the "doctrines of grace" in tracts and sermons published directly against the then-explosively growing Methodist movement. Even his famous hymn, Rock of Ages, was written to refute Methodist conversion teaching which emphasized emotional experience during the process, etc.

Should my tears ne’er cease to flow
Should my zeal no languor know
All for sin could not atone
Christ must save and Christ alone.

Many of his theological and devotional works center on the fundamental experimental realities of Calvinistic doctrine, i.e. the inability of the sinner to believe or work to righteousness and the inexhaustible riches and abundance of the grace of God in Christ Jesus.
