A very rare early war German New Testament presented to Frederick Tide at Camp Scott, Staten Island, N. Y. June 11. 1861.
Frederick Tide enlisted at age 25 on May 28, 1861, in Dunkirk, New York, to serve a three-year term during the American Civil War. He was formally mustered into service as a private in Company D of the 72nd New York Infantry, also known as the 3rd Regiment of the Excelsior Brigade, on June 20, 1861, at Camp Scott on Staten Island. During his service, he was wounded in action on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Williamsburg in Virginia, and died from his wounds two days later on May 7, 1862. His training site, Camp Scott, had been established on Staten Island in June 1861 specifically to organize General Daniel E. Sickles' Excelsior Brigade before the regiments were deployed south to Washington, D.C.
