A very important early articulation of the Southern "dignified slavery" position by prominent Presbyterian and pro-slavery, Confederate apologist, James Henley Thornwell. In it, he argues that Southern slavery is a dignified thing, that all true Southerners are opposed to the kinds of wild stories abolitionists tell, and that slaves will be better off under the Confederacy.

Thornwell, J. H. The State of the Country: An Article Republished from the Southern Presbyterian Review. Columbia, S. C. Southern Guardian Steam-Power Press. 1861. 32pp.
