1861 JAMES WALKER. Sermon Preached 30 Days from Civil War Beginning - Christians Need to be Willing to Suffer to Preserve Union.
Walker, James. The Spirit Proper to the Times. A Sermon Preached in King’s Chapel, Boston. Sunday, May 12, 1861. Boston. Press of Geo. C. Rand & Avery. 1861. 12pp.
Very nicely preserved sermon preached just 30 days after the formal beginning of hostilities between the North and the South. Walker urges faithful Christian Bostonians to recall that everyone is sacrificing; the miser sacrifices his present happiness for future. The sinful sacrifice their future happiness for present. And that Christians sacrifice and should sacrifice property and life for the preservation of the Union. Includes a section intended to address scruples of pacifism and non-violence among Christians as well.
Very good; minor ex library stamp from Colby / Andover Newton. Very crisp and clean.
