1862 & 1865 OHIO CIVIL WAR DIARIES. Accounts of Life Back Home, Soldiers’ Aid Society, and Death of Abraham Lincoln.
1862 appears to be by the wife [with a newborn] and 1865 by the husband of the same. The diaries’ owners are from somewhere in Cuyahoga County, Ohio with mentions of travels to Akron, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Solon, The Falls, Ridgeville, Bedford, etc., seemingly for the husband’s employment.
Excellent examples of day-to-day life for those at home, directly engaged in the war.
We have accounts of an horrible accident at the Falls -Ella Wyoff killed. Family readings of the Life of the Rev. Joseph Badger. Nellie Backman’s Funeral. Canning Molasses. Attending the Soldiers Aid Entertainment. Mr. Messenger the Bible Agent Staying with Us Tonight. Uncle Hopkins Preached this Sabbath. Attending the Methodist Church in the Forenoon & in the Afternoon going to a Funeral at the Campbellites. Visiting Maritus Corners with the Sabbath School. A minister named Rev. O’Neil. Repeated Activity with the Mite Society and the Aid Society. Sugaring. Making Cheese. A fairly extensive cataloguing of the “Garments Finished” for the year [6pp].
Also includes extensive financial expenditures: Paid for a colt $125. Paid for filling 11 cavities in Mary’s Teeth $8.00. Sent to Pay for Evangelist for 2 Years $6.00. etc.
Heard the funeral sermon delivered by B. Hillsdale of Solon on the death of our beloved President, Abraham Lincoln.
There is repeated mention of Electa Franklin. Almost certainly Electa Franklin [1844-1923] born in Bedford, Cuyahoga County Ohio and buried in Solon, Ohio [Cuyahoga County].
Fairly concise entries throughout, but worth preserving.
