Very rare little pocket hymnal issued by Methodist tent evangelist, Andrew Manship, specifically for the use of Union hospitals and troops during the Civil War. In his preface, he indicates he isued the hymnal both because there was a want of the hymnals published by the American Tract Society and because he wished that the Methodists would be represented among the troops.
Manship was really the leading 19th century advocate of the traveling tent meeting and published several works on it. He continued his work during the war, laboring at home and among the troops.
Though noted as the 100th thousand imprint, it appears quite scarce, likely because of the intentionally economical production and its intended pocket use for soldiers.
Manship, Andrew [Comp.]. The Patriot's Hymn Book. Compiled and Published by A. Manship. Philadelphia. Carlton & Porter. 1862.
A good to good - example, handled as shown in lithographed paper cover and cloth spine, but remaining solid and attractive. The cover title repeated on the general title, tear to ffep affecting pastedown. Textually as one would expect with some minor foxing, a bit handled, and a few turned corners.
