1863 C. H. SPURGEON. Who Is This Spurgeon? Fantastically Rare Early Biography.
A really wonderful and sort of cheeky early biography of C. H. Spurgeon, just then, in 1863, really beginning his ministry at the national level. He had already been widely published, etc., but up until this, he was largely known in Baptist circles and to those who read his sermons [largely ministers].
The salty little work begins with a historically important assessment of his then-popularity:
Spurgeon! Spurgeon! Spurgeon! This name is in every mouth. "Have you heard Spurgeon preach?" "Have you ever seen him?" "Have you read such and such about him?" These, and such like, are questions every one is asking his acquaintance; and observing articles appearing in this paper and in that, and pamphlets flying hither and thither about this said gentleman, etc.
During this period, he was becoming a household name. And the presses were hot on it. These items were ephemeral and rarely survived. We have been fortunate enough to acquire a few of these very early pamphlets regarding Spurgeon [see our other listings]. We have 4 or 5 now, but I can tell you that we have perhaps handled 1 or 2 in the previous 20 years. So snag them up!
