A very attractive set of the complete commentaries of Thomas Scott [1747-1821], long-time friend of John Newton, under whose sway he became an evangelical. He was one of the founders of the Church Missionary Society, influenced William Wilberforce and William Carey, was a noted abolitionist, etc.,
It is perhaps not accidental that his commentary was published in the heat of the Civil War, just after the Emancipation Proclamation, and that it was known as supporting anti-slavery, radical abolitionist positions in its translation choices and textual comment.
Scott, Thomas. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, According to the Authorized Version, with Explanatory Notes, Practical Observations, and Copious Marginal References, by Thomas Scott, Rector of Aston Sanford, Bucks. Stereotype Edition, From the Fifth London Edition. With the Author's Last Corrections and Improvements. Volumes. I-VI. Boston. Published by Crocker and Brewster. 1864. Variously paginated.
A very good copy, bound in leather, very solid with some rubbing at extremities. Pages are bright and clean with some light foxing. A very nice set.
