A very nicely preserved example of a Civil War pocket New Testament, printed specifically to fit in inside Union Soldiers' uniform pocket. This particular example belonging to Jacob D. Witters of Lititz, Pennsylvania, then also signed by his son Emanuel G. Witters as well.
Interestingly, Jacob does not show in the mustering records, though he was married in and his son, Emanuel, was born in 1860. He then disappears from records until 1865 at the end of the war. It is not uncommon for the records to be incomplete and Jacob was likely mustered in with the 190th Pennsylvania Volunteers, Company C, which had many young men from Lititz. The 1865 editions were largely distributed to troops as they mustered out at the end of the War.
