1865 JEFFERSON DAVIS | CIVIL WAR. Scarce Broadside & Satyrical Song on Capture and Hanging of Confederate President
A wonderful and rather scarce Civil War broadside; we are, in fact, not able to trace another example.
Issued on the capture of former Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, it predicts a forthcoming hanging, perhaps even complete with his being dangled in the women's clothing he was reported to be disguised in when captured. The lyrics themselves are by one of the wittiest of the Civil War songers, Byron DeWolfe. [1835-1873].
Printed onwove paper with two woodcut illustrations, measuring 4.8 x 7.9 inches.
Good condition only with some foxing, marking, creasing and folds; typical with ephemeral items. To be overlooked in light of its scarcity; perhaps even a "unique" example. A few small puncture marks, one affecting three words of text, but without loss of sense.
A less attractive example of a Jefferson Davis capture announcement was sold in 2019 at auction for c.$2,500.00
