An exceptionally attractive, substantial example of the Works of Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758), American philosopher, Congregationalist theologian, and key architect of the First Great Awakening.

Serving primarily in Northampton, Massachusetts, before brief tenures at Stockbridge and Princeton, he bridged rigorous Calvinist orthodoxy with Enlightenment philosophy, particularly Locke's empiricism. One of the true polymaths of the era, Edwards shaped American intellectual history by producing metaphysical treatments of the human will and original sin alongside now canonical revivalist sermons like Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. His influence remains vast; his writings defined modern evangelical theology, reshaped reformed philosophy, and established him as one of early America's greatest intellectual figures.

The 1865 edition of his works marked a significant advance in the publication of Edwards' body of work. It largely retains the 1834 Edward Hickman text, including Edwards' "complete" treatises, sermons, and notes, but adds extensive biogrphical and critical content via a new 276-page introduction. The introduction is composed of Henry Rogers' philosophical commentary evaluating Edwards' intellectual genius, and Sereno Edwards Dwight's comprehensive biography. Dwight was Edwards' great-grandson, and included invaluable primary letters, family papers, and early anecdotes that remain foundational to Edwards scholarship.

A very good set in original half calf, bound in Belfast. Raised bands, textured cloth, and contrasting marbling on endpapers and foredges of text block. Very solid and clean with only a trifle of foxing. Slightly stiff at rear hinge of volume two. Retains the superb frontis of Edwards, often pilfered. Please note the small losses near the top band on volume two. Corners a bit bumped. Minor black ink splotch to lower foredge of text block on volume 2. A very handsome set.
