A very attractive publisher's custom leather binding edition of the United Presbyterian Board of Education's imprint of the Psalms, re-cementing their commitment to the strict, exclusive psalmody tradition of Scottish Covenanters and Seceders. The text utilized the revered 1650 Scottish Metrical Psalter as the only sanctioned text for congregational and family worship to the exclusion of human-composed hymns or instrumental accompaniment.

Published by the United Presbyterian Board of Education following the 1858 merger in Allegheny (Pittsburgh) that created the United Presbyterian Church of North America, this volume served as a primary confessional and liturgical standard defining the denomination's distinct theological identity against mainstream American Presbyterianism.

Printed in 1865 at the close of the American Civil War in Pittsburgh, a major hub for Scotch-Irish immigration and Covenanter theology, the imprint reflects the denomination's staunch anti-slavery mandate, which required members to renounce slaveholding and used the metrical Psalms as essential devotional tools for promoting liberation and social justice.

The Book of Psalms in Metre; Translated and Diligently Compared with the Original Text, and Former Translations. More Plain, smooth, and Agreeable to the Text than any Heretofore. Allowed by the Authority of the General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland, and Appointed to be Sung in Congregations and Families. Pittsburgh. United Presbyterian Board of Education. 1865. 327pp.

Very attractive publisher's blind embossed leather having the United Presbyterian Board of Publication medallion on both front and rear board. A bit rubbed, but very handsome. Worm trace from 60-77 in margin, just affecting a couple letters. Minor foxing.
