A rather scarce 1867 edition of a classic puritan work published as a key volume in James Nichol’s Series of Standard Divines (or Puritan Commentaries). During the 1860s, Edinburgh publisher James Nichol spearheaded a major Victorian resurgence of interest in 17th-century Nonconformist and Puritan theology by issuing scholarly, highly accessible reprints of scarce, classic treatises. To ensure scholarly rigor, Nichol engaged Alexander Balloch Grosart, one of the Victorian era's most prolific literary editors and antiquarians, to edit the series, standardize the texts, verify citations, and supply comprehensive biographical memoirs.

First published in 1677 by Richard Gilpin, a prominent ejected Nonconformist minister and physician, Daemonologia Sacra is considered one of the most sophisticated Puritan psychological and theological examinations of spiritual warfare, temptation, and mental distress. Grosart’s 1867 edition rescued Gilpin’s masterpiece from 17th-century scarcity, providing Victorian scholars and theologians with the definitive, fully annotated standard reference text, complete with Grosart's substantial introductory memoir. Today, this edition remains historically and bibliographically important as a prime representation of Victorian book production dedicated to preserving early modern British religious history and Nonconformist intellectual heritage.

It remains one of the few of Nichols' series yet to be re-issued. Scarce.
