Very scarce first edition of L. P. Rowland Jr.’s The Y. M. Christian Association Hymn-Book, with Tunes, significant in American hymnology and social history as the very first official hymn book published specifically for the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA).

Compiled by Lyman P. Rowland Jr., a prominent leader who served as the general secretary of the Boston YMCA, the first local chapter established in the United States, this volume reflects the organization’s pivotal post-Civil War transition from a localized urban ministry into a national evangelical movement. Printed in New York by the American Tract Society for the Boston YMCA at Tremont Temple, the book was tailored directly for young men’s prayer meetings, street-corner revivals, and interdenominational gatherings. By pairing accessible musical tunes directly with singable, lively evangelical texts, Rowland helped pioneer the genre of "gospel hymnody" that would dominate later 19th-century American revivalism, serving as an influential musical template for later YMCA songbooks and the mass urban campaigns of Dwight L. Moody and Ira D. Sankey.
