Very desirable first edition of the account of Peter Claver [b.1580], a missionary to South America who found his life's work among the newly "imported" Africans brought in to work the gold and silver mines. The native population in what is now Columbia were deemed not fit for the work, so the Spanish began running slave ships between the west coast of Africa and the east coast of South America to fill the labor demand. And here, Claver found his people. Still today he is considered the "patron saint of slaves" and to many the patron saint of Africa itself.

Finotti, Joseph M. Peter Claver: A Sketch of His Life and Labors in Behalf of the African Slave. Boston. Lee and Shepard. 1868. 117pp.

A fair copy only, bound in stained cloth, lightly shaken, with generally bright text. The text block is rippled.
