A scarce copy of the first extensive survey of Southern literature. It's author, James Wood Davidson, served in the Confederate Army from 18623-1863 as an adjutant of infantry in General Stonewall Jackson's army. After the War, he became a significant voice in the burgeoning "Southern Pride" movement, to preserve, rebuild, and bolster the reputation of Southern culture.

The work is expansive, citing 166 male and 75 female writers, each with biographical details, a list of published works, extracts, etc.

Davidson, James Wood. The Living Writers of hte South. New York. Carleton Publishers. 1869. First Edition. 635pp.

An attractive copy in original pebbled cloth, some rubbing as shown. Front pastedown with remains of a library pocket, front hinge to mull and a bit shaken, ffep with a small ex library stamp [Aliceville, Alabama]. Otherwise remarkably clean with some light thumbing and occasional foxing.
