Very scarce. We trace no other example of this important little piece of missionary history institutionally or in sale records. Because of its ephemeral nature and its intended distribution in other countries, it may well be the only extant example.

The work is a translation of The Borrowed Bible [1854] by Sara H. Browne [Maria's sister], a conversion narrative of a Roman Catholic, Michael O'Sullivan, and his call to preach the Gospel. Translated into Spanish apparently in Seville, Madrid, and in Mexico for distribution among Spanish-speaking Roman Catholics.

The translator was Maria Jane Bancroft Brown [1819-1908]. She was a graduate of Mount Holyoke Seminary, a prolific New England authoress, especially religious material for the young, and here gifts this copy of her translation into Spanish back to her Seminary.

Browne, Maria J. B. La Biblia Prestada. Publicado en Madrid, Sevilla, Y Mexico. Nd. c.1870. 128pp.

Pastedown has a label, "Given to the Mount Holyoke Seminary, by Miss Maria J. B. Browne." Then handwritten on flyleaf, "Presented to the Library of Mt. Holyoke Female Seminary, by the Translator. July 1st, 1874" Later ex library stamps.

Good, solid copy in original cloth. 3/4 inch chip at head of spine, faded at extremities.
