1849 SCOTTISH PRESBYTERIAN. Fine 12mo Leather Album w/28 Carte de Visites.
An absolutely charming and irreplaceable 12mo size leather album filled, front to back, with 28 carte de visites of prominent and lesser-known Scottish Presbyterian divines, largely from in and Glasgow and its surrounding environs.
Fascinatingly, The Christian Times intentionally focused on everyday ministers and people. Articles were sought by pastors of smaller churches and parishes, from working class people, etc., It was created almost as an anti-type to the large London Christian papers. Not all contributors were Presbyterian, but certainly the majority.
Many of the CDV's were produced for The Christian Times Portrait Gallery, all of which now seem scarce. An advert in The Christians Times for 1849 announces these photographs will be soon forthcoming, though only mentions 12. This would put the production likely from 1850 and then continuing up through 1852 or so if they kept up the original pace.
