A rather nicely preserved textual edition of the important second Hawaiian edition of Jarves' classic on the Sandwich Islands. It includes wood-engraved illustrations in the text. and is the only edition with Whitney's appendix with agricultural and commercial statistics as well as a "Historical Sketch of Hawaiian Volcanoes" not in earlier editions.
This edition just fetched over $950 at both Bonhams and at Bubb Kuyper.
Jarvis, James Jackson. History of the Hawaiian Islands: Embracing their Antiquities, Mythology, Legends, Discovery by Europeans in the Sixteenth Century, Re-Discovery by Cook, with their Civil, Religious and Political History, from the Earliest Traditionary Period to the Year 1846. Fourth Edition [Second Hawaiian]. With an Appendix. Honolulu: Henry M. Whitney, Publisher. 1872. 242pp. + Catalog with Hawaiian Adverts.
A good. copy in quarter calf, boards nearly detached and spine with some chipping. Textually very good. A bit shaken generally. Unusually, it retains the print frontis to house the albumen phootgraph of Kamehameha V., King of the Hawaiian Islands. It is not only not present, it was clearly never inserted. Some bibliographic sources seem to hint that the run of photos ran short of the printed book edition and thus some were simply left blank.
