1872 PRIMITIVE METHODIST. Life of Anti-High Brow, Camp-Meeting Methodist, Hugh Bourne - Fine Leather

A very attractively presented copy of the life of Hugh Bourne [1772-1852], co-founder of Primitive Methodism.

By around 1900, the Wesleyan-Methodist movement had become all to "Anglican," educated, and up-classed for Bourne's liking. He began to wage war against it, emphasizing American style camp-meetings, focusing on working class regions of England, and preaching open air. In his mind, this was a return to Wesley's vision and to the book of Acts. 

The Wesleyan-Methodist leadership disagreed, gave him the left boot of fellowship to the backside, and the Primitive Methodist church was born. As before, he emphasized outdoor preaching, camp-meetings, deep personal experience, and a disregard for title, wealth, education, or status. These became the hallmarks of the Primitive Methodist movement.

Good in original very attractive, substantial morocco binding with gold, black, and relief designs on both boards and spine. Small loss at head of spine as shown, corner just through and bumped. Both hinges neatly repaired. Handsome, and ready for another lifetime of use.
