Very rare work written on the heels of the Civil War. With the deaths related to the Civil War numbering over 500,000, or between 2 and 3% of the general population, the idea of contact with departed loved ones saw a dramatic upswing. Young wives seeking soldiers who died in battle, fathers and mothers wanting closure with a son, young children who grew up without their father, etc., 

A. B. Morrison, Methodist minister of the Southern Illinois Conference writes to show the seances and spiritual rappings, knockings, and manifestations and hoaxes at best and satanic and demonic workings at worst. 

Morrison's work is unique for the period in that, rather than simply reporting what he had heard or making assumptions, he visited various seances, mediums, etc., in order to give a full account.
