C. H. Spurgeon's photograph was available in the Victorian era on engravings, photographic carte de visites, cabinet cards, cigarette cards, and more. He was one of the most popular personages in England. That said, many of the images are of a very poor quality.
The present example is one of the few exceptions. Mounted to a full sheet and neatly surrounded with an engraved frame, this Woodburytype photograph in sepia is superb.
Published by Lock & Whitfield, c.1880, the details are striking and clear, down to the individual hairs on the beard. Just about as fine an image of Spurgeon as it is possible to obtain.
The sheet measures 8 x 10.5 inches, the image 3.5 x 5 inches. Very good condition.
