An exceptional example of one of the finest 19th century production bindings of the era. This limited run by Bickers & Son special large paper edition of Pilgrims Progress, with illustrations by Thomas Stothard, is bound in two tone vellum, replicating a renaissance binding of the very highest order. The spine in aged cream vellum with extremus raised bands and deeply embossed red morocco labels. The boards in a buff leather / vellum with elaborate blind decoration.
The papers all untrimmed as called for, marbled endpapers, with the 19th century bookplate of M.P. Robert Alfred Cunliffe. A truly beautiful production.
Bunyan, John. The Pilgrims Progress from this World to that which is to Come. With Sixteen Illustrations by Thomas Stothard, Reproduced in Permanent Photography. London. Bickers & Son. 1882. 379pp.
Very good, some light rubbing at extremities, surface breach for top 1.5 inches of front hinge. Some spotting to uneven foredges [again, as called for]. Vellum somewhat handled, which to our mind is for the better.
