1892 C. H. SPURGEON. Autograph Printer's Galleys Published Immediately After His Death
Wonderful piece of Spurgeonalia.
Each Lord's Day, Spurgeon's rhythm was the same. His secretary would take down his sermon long-hand as he preached [which, for many years, was from a simple 4 x 6ish card]. Then, on Monday, he would revise the secretarial transcript in his own hand. This would then be forwarded to Passmore & Alabaster, who would return galley proofs, which would undergo another round of revision.
The present has additional interest as it was originally preached Thursday Evening, October 23, 1890 on the death of Deacon William Olney of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, but was prepared for press and revised for publication by Spurgeon to be printed February 21st, 1892, just three weeks after his death. It seems that perhaps his wife or children felt the sermon to be so applicable also to Charles H. Spurgeon himself, that they re-issued it for Sabbath reading just after his death. Published in the MTP under the February 21st, 1892 date.
It is of course only partial, but all the marginal notes are in the hand of Spurgeon. Quite a touching item with the intimate connection to his own death, prescribed as a reading just afterward.
