Very rare and desirable early "pocket" edition of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. George Routledge’s Pocket Library series helped make possible the democratization of this classic Gothic monster masterpiece by making it available in an affordable and portable format for the rapidly expanding late 19th century American commuting and leisure-reading public. George Munro had already issued an edition as part of his Seaside Library series, which was similarly cost-effective, but far less portable.

Aside from Frankenstein's role as a foundational Gothic novel, the imprint solidified Dr. Frankenstein's monster's place in the cultural imagination in a way that would assure was found along side Count Dracula and the Werewolf when monster-mania would sweep the nation three decades later.

Shelley, Mrs. [Mary]. Frankenstein; Or, The Modern Prometheus. London. George Routledge and Sons. 1888. 317pp.

Good - as shown. Rare in any state; some chips to spine as shown, board edges rubbed. It appears the spine has been relaid at some point. Interior generally solid, a bit toned. Small stain at foredge of text block. A very solid working copy of a scarce edition.
