1889 ANDREW MURRAY / WALTER MARSHALL. The Highway of Holiness; or Gospel Mystery of Sanctification w/Manuscript Additions
A really unusual little volume; scarce in any state, this is Andrew Murray's Keswickian edition of the puritan, Walter Marshall's original work on Sanctification, originally published in 1692. It was unusually optimistic for a puritan view of the potential walk of Christian abundance available by the work of Christ and Spirit and readily embraced and distributed by those of the Higher Life movements.
Additionally, this volume is in an attractive full leather binding and interleaved wherein extensive textual references and additions to the book are included. Additionally, there are additions and corrections in the text. Was this potentially a revised volume for the next edition? Or used to teach or preach the material? It is unclear. A lovely example of a rare work with unique provenance.
Marshall, Walter; Andrew Murray [Introduction]. Sanctification; Or, The Highway of Holiness. An Abridgment [in the Author's own Words] of The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification. London. James Nisbet. 1889. New Edition. 84pp + Interleaves.
Good with some light rubbing to binding, attractive and solid, decorative endpapers and gilt dentils. Some signatures a bit forward and lightly shaken. A D. Russell Macfarlane [who we can only presume hated books] has decided to stamp his name in it . . . almost obnoxiously so repeatedly on the prelims; otherwise subdued.
