A fascinating 76pp manuscript of 10 sermons on the work of the Holy Spirit, with sermons from Luke, Acts, and Ephesians, including The Promise of the FatherThe Pentecostal ExperienceThe Power of the Hoy SpiritThe Seeker TarryingThe Baptism of/with the Spirit, Filled with the Spirit, etc.

The manuscript likely dates from somewhere between 1890 and 1910, being in a lined journal distributed by Hayes & Bettes, who were active during these years. Of particular interest to the intersection between Methodist-Holiness churches and the emerging Pentecostal movement, especially the sermon working on the distinction between between the Baptism "of" or "with" the Holy Spirit, etc.,

The manuscript notes that these are the sermons of Clark. It is unclear who the author is, but likely traceable. One clipped extract loosely inserted, with notes in the author's hand, is dated to 1905.

Extract:

". . . the conversion of William Watters, the first Native-American itinerant preacher. His associates considered him a very good Christian when he was but 16 or 17 years of age, but he evidently thought quite different of himself. After hearing Strawbridge, King & Williams preach [in 1770] he says I could not not concern what they meant by saying we must be born again; and though I thought but little of all I heard for some time, yet I dared not despise them as many did. It was my daily prayer that God would teach me the way of salvation and not suffer me to be deceived. A few days after this he, with his eldest brother and family attended a Methodist Prayer Meeting held in his neighborhood on a Sabbath day. Here he says he saw a man he knew to be a poor sinner trembling, weeping, and praying as though he his all depended on the present moment; his soul and body were in agony. He went from this place with a full determination to seek the Lord with all his heart, etc. . . "

etc.

A good + copy, bound in cloth, lightly shaken, with generally bright pages.
