Very attractive second edition of one of the most widely-distributed slave memoirs of the 19th century. It was particularly gripping to Northerners who saw the re-enslavement of a family who had legitimately obtained "freeman" status as a confirmation that slavery must be completely dismantled if the future of any black person in America was to ever be secure.

It was released as a highly-celebrated motion picture of the same name in 2013.

[Slavery]. Northup, Solomon. Twelve Years a Slave. The Thrilling Story of a Free Colored Man, Kidnapped in Washington in 1841, Sold into Slavery, and After a Twelve Years' Bondage, Reclaimed by State Authority from a Cotton Plantation in Louisiana. New York. International Book Company. Nd. c.1891. Second Edition. 336pp.

A very nice second edition. First editions, though available on the market, fetch thousands of dollars these days. The second edition is actually more difficult to find in the trade because of its relative affordability.

Good + with some rubbing, largely at extremities, small nick through at head of front hinge, corners mildly bumped and moderately rubbed, just through on front lower. Mild stain at foredge of board. Ghosted ring stains on rear board [a faint pair]. Interior is very good, solid, crisp, and clean aside from a minor spot of foxing here and there. A nice example.
