A wonderful assemblage of very early editions, first editions, and signed editions of works by one of the most important influences on Evan Roberts and the Welsh Revival, Jessie Penn-Lewis [1861-1927]. She also played a critical role in the Keswick movement, as one of its earliest and most female "deeper life" theologians and teachers. In 1901, I believe she was the first female to address a mixed gender audience at Keswick. She was also a frequent speaker for the higher life conferences of the YWCA and Mildmay movements as well. Her fame as a speaker crossed the Atlantic and she was invited to preach for R. A. Torrey and for A. B. Simpson.

Her most notable early spiritual influences were her relationship with Keswick founder, Evan H. Hopkins, her reading of The Spirit of Christ by Andrew Murray, and her encounter with the Spiritual Torrents of Madame Guyon.

In some ways she may be viewed as the critical hinge upon which the Welsh Revival first swung. In 1902, with her Welsh Calvinistic Roots, she was approached at the Keswick Convention by a group of Welsh Christians asking her aid in forming a Keswick movement in Wales. She helped launch the convention in 1903, and was a speaker there at multiple services. It was there that R. A. Torrey preached his messages that led to the prayer meetings that launched the Welsh Revival.

Penn-Lewis became the mentor to the young Evan Roberts and reported on the Welsh Revival for the Life of Faith magazine for the Keswick movement. So close was the relationship between Roberts and Penn-Lewis, that when Roberts experienced his breakdown in 1905, he moved in with the Penn-Lewis family to recuperate. The two then together founded The Overcomer [1908] periodical and wrote War on the Saints [1912].

Penn-Lewis autographs are quite scarce; delighted to have two of them in this fine assemblage. Also includes her scarce work on women in ministry and her work on the Welsh Revival proper.
