John Norton Loughborough’s The Great Second Advent Movement, provides a significant, firsthand history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. One of the church’s original pioneers, he joined the movement in 1852, having personally witnessed the Millerite movement, the Disappointment of 1844, and the formal organization of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1863. Because of his proximity to the movement, first as an outsider, his work has taken on special significance. It contains eyewitness record of the denomination’s origins, including accounts of early evangelism, organizational developments, and the role of Ellen G. White’s prophetic ministry.

The work also documents the deeply entrenched abolitionist roots of the early Advent movement. Loughborough highlights how early Millerites and pioneer Sabbatarian Adventists, including key leaders like Joseph Bates and Joshua V. Himes, were staunchly anti-slavery, viewing slavery as a national sin and moral evil that would bring divine judgment upon the United States. situating the anti-slavery movement within their broader prophetic framework of social reform and end-time theology.
