A very scarce work, the study by Lauber was really the first significant and substantive exploration of the exploitation of Native American during the early Colonial and post-Colonial era in a version of chattel slavery. Because of the 19th century occupation with the enslavement of Africans [by quantity, vastly larger], the enslavement of other populations, i.e. the Native Americans, Mexicans, and Chinese were often overlooked.

If Helen Hunt Jackson's Century of Dishonor [1881] exposed the chronic treaty breaking, bad faith, and genocide of Native Americans, Lauber rounds out the narrative by reminding us of their enslavement story.
