A very nice signed, first edition of Charles Williams’s He Came Down from Heaven. Commissioned for Heinemann's "I Believe" series of personal essays, the volume outlines Williams’s distinct, highly original theological vision. It presents his famous formulation of the Fall of Man, arguing that human sin was fundamentally an insistence on knowing evil experientially rather than just good, and develops his doctrines of "Substitution" and "Exchange" (the idea that Christians can bear one another's burdens and suffering across space and time). It also includes a major chapter on "The Theology of Romantic Love," connecting Dante’s vision of Beatrice to the divine incarnation and the path toward God.
The text played a direct role in solidifying Williams’s standing as a major Christian thinker just before he moved to Oxford at the outbreak of World War II in 1939. C. S. Lewis read Williams's theological writings with intense admiration during the late 1930s. The concepts introduced in He Came Down from Heaven, specifically the doctrines of co-inherence, vicarious substitution, and romantic theology, profoundly shaped Lewis’s own work. Lewis adopted and adapted these exact themes in his theological fantasy That Hideous Strength (where the Character of Grace draws heavily on Williams) and in The Great Divorce and Till We Have Faces.
For J. R. R. Tolkien and the broader Inklings circle, He Came Down from Heaven represents the idiosyncratic, mystical theology that made Williams such a polarizing [but popular] presence when he joined their meetings at Oxford. He was in many ways, the oddest Inkling. While Lewis championed Williams’s concept of "exchange" and romantic theology, Tolkien was far more reserved, often expressing skepticism toward Williams’s esoteric, near-Rosicrucian framework and its divergence from traditional Catholic orthodoxy. Nevertheless, the debates generated by Williams’s ideas in works like He Came Down from Heaven fueled intense theological and imaginative discussions during the prime years of the Inklings.
