1950 CAMBRIDGE BIBLE. Rare Snakeskin Binding in Snakeskin Presentation Box.
Here is a fascinating item of which we can locate no other examples. Probably executed sometime between 1930 and 1960, we have two faux snakeskin bound volumes housed in a corresponding snakeskin box.
These must have been a specialty presentation and seem to have been produced by Cambridge themselves. A wonderful piece of Bible production history.
The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments Translated out of the Original Tongues; and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, by His Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches. Cambridge. At the University Press. Cameo 16mo. refs. India Paper.
ALSO
The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church According to the Church of England. Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David Pointed as they are to be Sung or Said in Churches, etc. Cambridge. Printed at the University Press. Pitt: Bourg. 32mo India Paper.
Each in exceptionally crisp, clean condition. Bindings having the very, very slightest rubbing at extremities. Endpapers do have a few stray foxing spots. All texts pristine and clean, though a few turned corners or slight ripples to page. In all likelihood, unused.
The box itself has some rubbing, but actually appears more organic for that. Very solid and attractive. The only fault is the front left lid hinge is split for 3/4 inch. Easily repairable from the interior if you wish. Otherwise, some rubbing, but attractive. Interior gold paper over hinge is through, but not impacting stability.
