A wonderful little piece of Civil Rights history. The present copy of the first edition of Howard Thurman's classic work is signed by Howard Thurman on the title, and was then later gifted by Kivie and Emily Kaplan in 1963.
Howard Thurman was a long-time minister and Civil Rights leader. He shared a decade plus relationship with Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta and it was King who helped mentor Thurman as a leader in the non-violence movement, etc.
Just as interesting, it has been gifted by Emily, Edward, & Kivie Kaplan to a fellow worker in the Civil Rights movement. Kivie was for many years head of the NAACP and was also friends with the King Family. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. inscribed a copy of his work, Strength to Love, "To my Friends Emily and Kivie Kaplan In appreciation for your untiring efforts to make the brotherhood of man a reality. Martin."
An excellent book and a wonderful double-association copy.
