A handsomely bound example of the pivotal fourteenth edition of John Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations (1968), edited by Emily Morison Beck. The updated edition was a bit of a milestone for what had long been the most widely consulted reference work of quotations in American publishing history. 

First published in 1855, Bartlett's maintained its classic chronological, source-traced framework, arranging entries by author birth date and publication history rather than broad topical index, and this expanded 1,750-page edition significantly modernized the canon. Beck notably broadened the work’s scope to incorporate landmark mid-20th-century voices, modern literature, world leaders, civil rights rhetoric, and contemporary pop culture while preserving the strict bibliographical rigour that defined the standard reference text.

As the first major post-Centennial revision produced by Little, Brown and Company, it stands as the definitive snapshot of late-1960s cultural, political, and literary literacy.
