A beautifully preserved cast iron license plate topper dating from the 1930's.
The tag would have been purchased by a black visitor to the famed "American Beach." The beach embraced of its segregated nature via its tagline, which was prominently displayed on signs all over the park, a "Negro Ocean Playground." The beach was established on Amelia Island on the Atlantic coast of Florida by A. L. Lewis, President of the African-American Insurance Co. in 1933. It was one of the few beaches on the entire Atlantic coast open to black Americans.
There is a great little historical video available here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQXBU0sLI64
