c.1925 EVELYN UNDERHILL. Manuscript of Her Influential "Inkling" Influence Poem, Immanence.
A very important and lovely full autograph manuscript by perhaps the most important voice for “mystical” Christianity in the 20th century. She was influential on C. S. Lewis, Tolkien, and her posthumous works were edited by Charles Williams. A beautiful item.
Anything autographed or in manuscript by Evelyn Underhill is incredibly rare and this is an especially fine example.
In full:
I come in the little things,
Saith the Lord;
Not borne on morning wings
Of majesty; but I have set my feet
Amidst the delicate and bladed wheat
That springs triumphant in the furrowed sod—
There do I dwell, in weakness and in power;
Not broken or divided, said our God!
In your straight garden plot I come to flower;
About your porch my vine,
Meek, fruitful, doth entwine,
Waits, at the threshold, Love's appointed hour.
Evelyn Underhill
In very good condition on a fine gray paper, boldly inked and signed, complete on one side of a quarter sheet. It would be difficult to imagine a more appropriate framing example.
