1557 GENEVA NEW TESTAMENT. Rare Bagster Fac-Similie of the Genevan Testament, 1557.
A very scarce c.1840 facsimile of the historically critical 1557 Geneva New Testament. This was a milestone in English translation, being a revision largely of Tyndale's 1534 for the modern reader and including, for the very first time, a system of numbering verses to make for easier reference. We do not trace a complete example being offered at auction in the record. Single leaves can fetch $5,000 - $7,000 on the private market.
The next edition was the present, issued by Samuel Bagster in recognition of its important status in the history of Scripture translation. It was issued likely in 1840, and then followed by the English Hexapla of 1841.
