The only example of this wonderful artifact we have ever handled.
Founded in 1866 by the Baptist preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the Metropolitan Tabernacle Colportage Association was established as a street-level mission to reach Victorian London's working-class neighborhoods. Spurgeon saw door-to-door literature distribution not merely as a commercial enterprise, but as a vital form of home evangelism designed to bring Christian devotion into homes that rarely engaged with formal church life.
The association's colporteurs served as full-time itinerant missionaries who carried packs filled with Bibles, prayer guides, devotional works, and Spurgeon’s printed sermons into South London's crowded tenements, markets, and industrial sites. Beyond selling affordable religious literature, these agents functioned as pastoral presence on the ground. They routinely entered homes to pray with families, visit the sick, lead informal cottage Bible readings, and preach open-air addresses to workers and passersby.
In perfect, untouched condition with some wear and tenderness to the handle and hinges, the original stenciling clear and well-preserved, and the interior worn with some stains as one would expect.
